Rising Damp

The movement of moisture upward through permeable building materials by capillary action (through pores in masonry). Rising Damp can become a problem if moisture penetrates vulnerable materials or finishes, particularly in the occupied parts of a building.

The problem, which is most likely to affect older buildings where a dpc is not in place, and is caused when porous masonry comes into contact with damp earth. Damp masonry can result in a number of well documented structural timber problems such as wet rot, dry rot and woodworm. Rising Damp is unsightly, poses a health risk, and particularly damaging to internal decorations i.e. wallpaper.

The Solution: As always, the first step is to properly diagnose the problem. Once Rising Damp has been correctly identified as the source of dampness within a structure, the first step is to introduce a physical barrier using either damp-proof membranes or a chemical damp-proof course constituting hydrophobic (water-repellent) materials.

Contaminated plaster must be removed and replaced with specialist plasters that prevent the travel or residual salts and moisture from the masonry to newly applied surfaces and decorations.

Northern Remedials also specialise in basement waterproofing, full details of which can be found under the Basement Conversion section of this site.
